MathCityMap celebrates the Erasmus Days 2020! As the MathCityMap project is co-funded by Erasmus+ (MaSCE³), we contribute to the Erasmus Days with two MCM@home session. Our MCM Educator Simone is being ready for your questions on the tasks in the chat of the Digital Classroom.

To participate in our virtual Erasmus Days Party, you just have to enter the follwoing codes in the MathCityMap app:

  • Thursday, October 15th (14-15.30 CEST): s191180
  • Friday, October 16th (14-15.30 CEST): s451181

As a small foretaste of the trail, we present here the task “The Atomium” which was created by our Portuguese colleague Ana Barbosa. She chose the Atomium as the object for the task, as it is an iconic attraction in Brussels, where our virtual Erasmus Days Trail is placed. The task about the Atomium deals with the famous Euler rule, which relates the number of vertices (spheres of the Atomium), edges (rods of the Atomium) and surfaces of a hypothetical solid, which was created from its architectural structure.

We are looking forward to your participation und wish a lot of fun!

Over the past three days, we were working on the further development of our app: During this year’s project meeting of the MoMaTrE team (Mobile Math Trails in Europe), we discussed many different ideas for the MathCityMap app in Berlin from Thursday to Saturday.

Apart from the MathCityMap team from Goethe University Frankfurt, our project partners from the universities of Lyon (France), Porto, Lisbon (each Portugal) and Nitra (Slovakia) also took part. Furthermore, we were actively supported by representatives of the Spanish Teachers’ Association and the Berlin app developer autentek.

All participants present the current state of the MathCityMap system in a constructive working atmosphere: Within the framework of MoMaTrE, the idea of the digital classroom is prototypically implemented, which allows teachers to observe the progress of individual groups when completing an MCM math trail. In addition, the pirate narrative created an opportunity to focus on playful learning using MathCityMap.

The mobile app version will soon be expanded as part of the MoMaTrE project, which will make it much easier to create or edit MCM math trails using a smartphone. We are also working intensively on our new community website, which should enable users to exchange and rate math trails. Furthermore, the math trail idea will be embedded in the curriculum in the European partner countries. Last but not least, two major multiplier events are on the program: In April, a one-week teacher training course will take place in Granada, Spain, while the STEM conference ROSETA is due in Porto, Portugal in June.

Of course, the app was not only further developed theoretically, but also put to practical use in an exciting math trail at the Gendarmenmarkt. In the digital classroom, the groups were able to demonstrate their mathematical knowledge while getting to know Berlin.

We would like to thank all partners for the productive project meeting!

On Saturday, October 12, 2019, we celebrated the international Erasmusdays with our Erasmus + project MoMaTrE. During perfect weather, mathematical trails were conducted at the five locations in Frankfurt, Lyon, Nitra, Porto and Santander.

Together with our partners, fourteen new MathCityMap mathtrails were created for this day and these were downloaded more than 200 times on Saturday alone. This is a great success for the project. In particular, we would like to thank the DAAD for supporting this special activity.

But the main actors were undoubtedly the numerous mathtrailer and task solvers who were happy about sweets and certificates.

Within the Erasmus+ project „Mobile Math Trails in Europe“, 30 European university students met in Frankfurt for the two last weeks of March 2019. Their goal: Learn about math trails and MathCityMap, create own math trails, test them with students, and of course – make intercultural and international contacts.

The Intensive Study Programme took place at Goethe University Frankfurt from 18th till 30th March 2019. The participating students came from Nitra (Slovakia), Lyon (France), Porto (Portugal), Lisbon (Portugal) and Frankfurt (Germany).

Opening of the ISP

During the first days, the students received a lot of input from our project partners and invited experts in the field of outdoor education. The students heard different lectures on task design and outdoor research, ran a traditional math trail without technical equipment and a MathCityMap math trail around Campus Bockenheim. With nice weather, the students were very motivated in solving as many tasks as possible.

A group while running a MCM trail

After a change of perspective, the students became task creators on their own. In international groups they worked on tasks for school students on different levels. Firstly, they searched for tasks in Frankfurt’s New Old Town, conducted a peer review and feedback round and finally created a tested math trail. During the next week, school students arrived on two different days to run the math trails. Even though the tasks were of course in English, the school students had a lot of fun and success in solving the MCM tasks.

The students in Frankfurt’s New Old Town

Special highlights within the Intensive Study Programme were the excursion to the Mathematikum in Gießen with a lecture by Albrecht Beutelspacher, the visits of German math classes and the final math trail competition during the closing ceremony with awards and certificates.

Visit of the Mathematikum

After the intense time we can conclude: The two weeks were a big success for the students and also for the whole MoMaTrE and MathCityMap project. Thank you to all participants and their contributions. We are looking forward to many new tasks designed by the students!

During the last weeks (9.11.-15.11.2018), we could use and spread MathCityMap for the first time on Mexican ground. Through its different architectures and historical influences, the country provides great ideas for MCM tasks.

On 09.11.2018, we visited the German school in Mexico City (Campus Lomas Verde) and did a teacher training with interested teachers. On the school yard, we created tasks on slope, volume and combinatory in front of impressive mountains. It was measured, discussed and caluclated.

Of course, we also created tasks directly in Mexico City, this time in Spanish. And also during a trip at the Aztecs pyramids, we gathered measuring data for our “Ruta Azteca”, which will be available in the portal soon.

On 14.11. and 15.11.2018, MCM was then presented at the TEMBI V conference at University Puebla. During a three session workshop with about 75 participating Mexican teachers, theoretical backgrounds were combined with practical work phases from student’s and teacher’s perspectives. The participants had a lot of fun and were motivated during the solution of the tasks. Further, they became creative while searching for own task ideas, which were then implemented in the portal.

We are curious about MCM in Mexico and are happily waiting for the tareas mexicanas!
